Board approves personnel schedules and handbook edits; staff highlights summer meal pickups and facility repairs

The Clay County Board of Education on June 18 approved the district’s certified and support personnel salary schedules and adopted proposed edits to the elementary and high school handbooks on second reading.

The support personnel schedule includes a 75‑cent hourly raise announced during the meeting. A board member asked who defines an “indecent manner” in the student handbooks; staff answered that building principals make site‑level determinations consistent with policy. The board approved both the handbook edits and the salary schedules by vote.

In staff reports, Mr. Peoples said wing construction is continuing but crews are pausing for material deliveries, and the gym floor is scheduled for August. Ms. Monroe reviewed retirements (noting John Denton and Kim Upton) and provided details of a new summer non‑congregate meal distribution pilot: under state permission the district provided bulk take‑home meal packs allowing families to pick up up to seven days’ worth of breakfasts and lunches; staff described packing hundreds of meal bundles during June distribution days.

“The state granted us permission to not only serve meals to the kids in summer school, but they allowed non‑congregate serving, where we can serve bulk meals — up to seven,” Ms. Monroe said, describing the pilot and the staffing challenges it created. Staff said officer and central office assistance helped distribute leftover meals into the community on early days of the pilot.

The board also heard a reminder that booster clubs and PTOs must submit annual financial forms under district policy and that fundraising approvals will be withheld for groups that remain noncompliant.

The board adjourned at the end of the regular session.
