Cheatham County approves exchange with school board to acquire property, fund new storage building

Cheatham County's legislative body voted on Jan. 25 to authorize the county mayor to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Cheatham County Board of Education to transfer a portion of the Board's Ashland City property to the county.
Under the MOU, the county will convey compensation to the Board by constructing a new metal storage building measuring 40 feet by 50 feet on the Board's remaining Ashland City property; upon completion the new building will become Board property. The county also agreed to pay the Board $6,599.56 for shelving that had been removed and used elsewhere by the county and to assemble and install metal shelving the Board purchases for the new building. The county will be responsible for the cost of any deed and survey and will obtain a title search; the county's obligations are contingent on a title search that shows no material defects. The agreement provides a temporary easement to Chestnut Street for county vehicles and specifies conditions under which the easement will expire.
County Mayor Kerry McCarver presented the item; Commissioner Diana Pike Lovell moved to approve the mayor's signature on the MOU, seconded by Commissioner David Anderson. The legislative body approved the item on a roll-call vote of 12–0–0 (Resolution 9(A)).
The MOU text appears in the packet and includes Exhibit A (a survey showing the Property). The MOU also authorizes installation of security fencing to visually screen any enclosed area, but preserves Board access to the Storage Building until Board chattels have been moved to the new building. The county will pay the Board's realtor $150 for services related to the project and will cover subdivision costs if a subdivision is required prior to conveyance.
What happens next: Completion of the title search is a condition of the county’s obligations. If title is clear, the parties will execute the deeds and the county will begin construction of the replacement storage building per the MOU.
