The district expects to complete facility‑needs assessments within the next few weeks and host additional in‑person meetings before any formal decision.
On the renaming, Himenez described a school‑based process in which parents, students and staff generated name candidates through classroom and grade‑level votes and a committee narrowed options. The top two names to be forwarded to the broader community are "Desert Valley Elementary School" and "Roberto Moreno Elementary School" (the committee said Roberto Moreno was a longtime local educator). The district will open a community survey (one weekend) to collect public input and plans to return survey results to the board at its June 25 meeting. Himenez noted the mascot (Lobos) would remain unchanged.
Board members emphasized that student voice was a priority in the process and that the board will make a final determination after reviewing survey results and the site committee’s recommendations. No board vote was taken at the meeting; the item is slated for further action after the community survey period.
