Board authorizes Deming Cesar Chavez school improvement application

The Deming Public Schools Board of Education voted to authorize Deming Cesar Chavez Charter High School’s school improvement and transformation application following a presentation from the school’s representative and a brief board discussion.

Miss Paxton, speaking on behalf of Deming Cesar Chavez Charter High School, said the school currently carries an MRI designation and reported, “Our graduation rate was at 65.5%.” She outlined a redesign focused on career pathways, credit recovery, increased academic rigor and data-driven instruction, and described planned measures including two newly hired interventionists (one for reading and writing and one for math), double-block classes, internships, certifications and expanded dual-credit opportunities. The school’s transition year was described as 2026–27, with a full rollout and evaluation targeted for 2029.

The board took a motion to authorize the application. A board member moved and another seconded; the board recorded affirmative votes from Mrs. Johnson, Mrs. Perez, Mr. Rosco, Mrs. Primley and Mr. Crow. No dissenting votes were recorded in the transcript.

Board members and staff framed the decision as enabling the school to implement its redesign with district support where appropriate and to pursue state or other resources tied to the transformation work. The authorization permits the school to proceed with the application process; it does not by itself change funding allocations or district oversight of other schools.

Next steps: staff will document the authorization and support the school’s application process as requested, and the board will monitor implementation and the school’s nine‑week data meetings and quarterly evaluations as the redesign proceeds.
