CDC delays vote on proposed name change, schedules executive-session review

Executive Director Thomas Boxley introduced the proposed name change as a measure to reflect a broader economic-development role. Attorney Richardson LaBruce explained that a board resolution would be followed by Town Council approval and filings with the Secretary of State and federal agencies; he characterized the change as primarily clarifying public perception rather than altering corporate powers, but said bylaws amendments could be required for specific future projects.
Several board members urged caution. Councilman Brown said the concern was not the label itself but the need for certainty about statutory treatment, funding implications and whether future bylaw amendments might be necessary. Brown recommended convening an executive session with legal counsel to examine state statutes and the CDC's corporate authority before taking a final vote.
A motion to table the item and place it on the next meeting's executive-session agenda was moved, seconded and carried. The board agreed to resume the matter after a privileged legal review so the membership and counsel could answer detailed statutory and funding questions.
