Mantua approves fence at Maple Springs Park, tables 10-space parking expansion

Mantua — The Town Council voted June 18 to install a fence along the west side of Maple Springs Park near the tennis courts to reduce liability and noise and to keep children away from hazardous landscaping. Funding for the fence was available in the park budget for the coming year.
Councilor Keith Johnson (speaker 3) told the council he and staff had identified the segment near the tennis courts where deer and landscaping debris present potential hazards. He said the fence — described as a low-maintenance vinyl-style barrier with a gate for maintenance access — would match an existing section and could be installed to align with an adjacent private fence.
The same councilor proposed adding 10 parking spaces on the park's east side to cover a ditch, but councilors raised concerns about drainage, planning/zoning approvals and precedent for private property waivers. Several members recommended tabling the parking expansion and instead prioritized the fence project. The council approved a motion to pay for and install the fence, with the parking project to be revisited after more study.
