Director Hicks described a range of volunteer roles — from daily helpers to occasional participants — and singled out the Ruff Runners Run Club, which takes shelter dogs on hikes and posts photos to social media to increase adoption visibility. She also described the 'sniff about' program, which allows members of the public to take dogs out for short outings to pet-friendly stores. Hicks said volunteer hours at the shelter doubled from more than 4,000 hours to over 8,000 last year, amounting to work roughly equivalent to four full-time employees.
Commissioner Kamalu praised the volunteer efforts and noted the community’s strong interest in animal welfare; Chair John Crofts offered general thanks and reminded staff of his open-door policy.
