The Ajo Unified District governing board approved several personnel and student-activity items during its Jan. 6 session, including hiring two substitute teachers, revisions to tutoring assignments, a coaching appointment and permission for an out-of-state senior class trip.
The superintendent recommended hiring Jessica Niega and Steven Garcia as substitute teachers for the 2025–26 school year; the board approved both appointments by unanimous vote. Administrators also requested additions and revisions to the district’s tutoring rosters, adding day-time availability and listing teachers including Ria Fernnade, Donessa Maningo, Lolio and Richard Rubino; the board approved the requested changes, 4–0.
On extra-duty positions, the board amended a recommendation on coaching assignments to appoint TJ Hernandez and Lisa Coyle as co-head softball coaches, while continuing to list Lisa in the head-coach role; trustees discussed that both are first-time softball head coaches and will share responsibilities. The motion to appoint the co-heads passed unanimously.
Student representatives requested permission to plan and fund a 2026 senior class trip outside the state; under existing board policy for overnight out-of-state travel, the board approved the request, and the motion carried 4–0.
All personnel and activity motions passed without recorded dissent. The board did not record individual mover/second names on the meeting transcript for these motions; motions were entered and recorded as carrying by voice vote.
