State approves Ajo Unified online school name and grade change to AO Online Academy (grades 9–12)

“...the current administration has been approved by state board of education to revise the online school to be from grades 9 to 12 and be renamed AO online academy for the Arizona Department of Education,” the staff presenter said, noting the state-level approvals on Jan. 20 and Jan. 22, 2026, in district records.
Staff said this item is an administrative implementation matter and that no board action was necessary during the study session; attachments were provided for board review and the district’s staff (including Miss Williams) had overseen the process with the state.
Board members asked brief clarifying questions about enrollment patterns; staff said most sign-ups are for high school grades and that the administrative change formalizes the current enrollment pattern.
Because the change was recorded by the state board of education, staff characterized the item as procedural and recommended no formal board motion in the study session. The board did not take a recorded vote on the name/grade change during this meeting.
