Union City council approves moving forward with Broadband Ready Communities application

Union City Borough Council voted July 9 to proceed with a public meeting and pursue the Broadband Ready Communities designation through the Erie Area Council of Governments (EACOG).
Borough staff reported the designation process would authorize EACOG to act as the municipal broadband champion and could open opportunities for additional internet service providers to enter the borough. Councilors were told the borough’s permitting requirements already fell within the program recommendations.
Councilor Kerns moved to proceed with the public meeting and resolution to seek the designation; Councilor Joyce seconded the motion and it passed unanimously. Borough staff will schedule the required public meeting as part of the designation process.
