Public input favors farmland preservation and rural character, planner reports

McKinley, the planner overseeing the master-plan re-examination outreach, summarized the public input gathered to date and recommended next steps for the Planning Board.
"I was very pleased with how our in-person session went," McKinley said, reporting that boards displayed at the session were full of sticky notes and dots and that participants strongly emphasized continuing the township's rural character and open-space preservation. She presented a document with photos and the full PowerPoint that has been circulated by Danielle.
McKinley reported 168 survey responses in the first week, a strong early response for a township of roughly 10,000 residents; respondents were mostly residents (many with 20-plus years in Millstone) and evenly distributed across adult age groups. Top priorities included farmland preservation, general land preservation, and regulation of residential development; respondents also showed interest in certain commercial uses such as flex/light-industrial space, medical offices, restaurants and craft-beverage production.
She recommended the subcommittee reconvene the week of July 6 to draft specific recommendations and work with the broader board as scheduling allows. The consultant and staff agreed to coordinate distribution of results and the next subcommittee meeting; McKinley said she will prepare recommended items and background data for that meeting.
The board discussed when to present draft recommendations to the full Planning Board; members agreed to decide timing by email as the July/August vacation period approaches.
