Milstone seeks up to $500,000 in Mammoth County grant to overhaul Abbott Park

Milstone Township officials asked residents to provide letters of support and partner commitments as they prepare an application to the Mammoth County Municipal Park Improvement Grant Program for Abbott Park.
Kevin Abernathy (township administrator) said the county program supports projects that expand recreation and match county priorities such as alignment with the county open-space plan and demonstrated community support. The township proposal would remove a failing asphalt surface and replace three tennis courts (with an option for a higher‑tension concrete foundation), add four pickleball courts, create a synthetic sand‑based area for batting or other activities, and potentially expand parking and add a flagpole. Abernathy said the county’s maximum award is $500,000 and the township will pursue the maximum while planning for phased construction if a smaller award is received.
Residents at the public hearing pledged support. Dan Murphy (38 Carriage Way) offered to donate a flagpole and said he would help organize business‑alliance fundraising; he pledged up to $10,000 in private donations if the county provides a full award. Pat Butch (40 Proin Way) said the Milstone Township Open Space Council and friends groups have discussed the project and can provide letters of support; she urged the township to include trail‑connectivity language and clarified that the required county match would come from the township open‑space trust fund, not the municipal tax levy.
Township staff asked residents to deliver letters of support by the end of June so they can be bundled into an application targeted for early July. Officials emphasized the grant is competitive and that the township will consider phases or alternative materials if full funding is not secured.
The committee opened and later closed the public hearing for the grant; the related grant resolution (26-152) was included in the consent agenda and adopted as part of the consent motion.
