Brigantine honors Special Olympics swim team after state meet success

The Brigantine City Council on June 17 honored the Brigantine Aquatic CenterGreen Heads Special Olympics swim team for advancing through the New Jersey Special Olympics meets June 5—8 and winning 20 medals, including six gold medals.
Council members introduced the eight athletes by name and presented medals and recognition. The team was listed as Jordan, Spencer, Stefan, Stanley, Sebastian, Ethan, Justin and Francis; council members and coaches said the athletes train in Brigantine year-round and that the season includes a three-meet progression that leads to the state games.
Several athletes spoke to the council. "I love swimming because swimming is my talent," one athlete said. "I love swimming because swimming is a fun thing to do," said another. Ethan Rodriguez told the council that swimming helps him exercise and that he is working on his breaststroke and dolphin kicks. A coach noted the programnamed for Stanleyhas taught roughly 120 special-needs children in the past year and focuses on water safety in addition to competition.
Council members thanked the coaches and volunteers and said the city is proud to have the athletes represent Brigantine at the state level. The recognition concluded with brief remarks of appreciation and a reminder of summer programming at the aquatic center.
