Commission plans speaker series, re-asks for water testing funds and lines up volunteer trail teams

The chair opened discussion of the budget and programming and members agreed to re-request funds to ensure bacterial water-quality testing is completed and that results are accessible. Commissioners reported uncertainty about whether bacterial samples were taken to a lab this summer and said they have not consistently received test results; the commission will ask for the budgeted money again to cover sampling and reporting.

Members proposed a community speaker series tied to climate action, shoreline vulnerability, trail building and restorative agriculture. The commission discussed modest honoraria ($50–$100) to attract speakers and debated scheduling (evenings preferred to reach working residents). The chair confirmed Rachel, Marie and Henry will form a subcommittee to plan speakers and logistics with the goal of holding talks in March–June before the fiscal-year cutoff.

The meeting also included planning for volunteer trail teams focused first on maintenance of existing paths rather than new construction. Commissioners highlighted the need to control volunteer work with a commission representative on every work team, discussed available local equipment (a chipper, a tractor) and proposed recruiting volunteers once snow and mud conditions allow.

The commission discussed tools for minute-taking and asked staff to research automated transcription solutions (Google Meet transcription, Otter.ai, and Zoom alternatives) to reduce the burden of manual minutes. No formal budget votes were taken at the meeting; the commission directed staff to follow up on testing funds, to convene the speaker-series subcommittee and to prepare volunteer recruitment messaging.
