Marlborough Board of Education members voted unanimously March 12 to revise the district—Y27 proposed budget after the superintendent reported higher-than-expected employee medical insurance costs.
Dr. Holly Hageman, superintendent, told the board the R8 medical insurance renewal had risen from the placeholder estimate of 15% to about 21% and that employee participation in medical benefits had increased. She recommended increasing the FY27 operating budget to cover the higher insurance expense and offsetting that increase by reducing the Capital Request.
Under the plan the board approved, the operating budget would increase by $107,000 to a revised proposed total of $9,352,184. The capital request would be reduced by $140,000 to a revised proposed total of $70,000 by removing a $20,000 Day Tank Sensor from the capital list and cutting $120,000 from the MES Egress Project. The motion conditions the $120,000 reduction on an approved transfer from the MES Roof Reserve to fund the egress work. Dr. Hageman said that with those adjustments the overall FY27 request would be $33,000 less than the board—irst proposed amount.
Board member Linda Earley moved the revision, and board member Amy Kuhrt seconded. The motion passed unanimously. The board recorded no public comments at the meeting.
After completing the budget vote the board approved a motion by Amy Kuhrt, seconded by Louise Concodello, to adjourn the meeting at 7:14 p.m.
Next procedural steps include completing any required internal approvals to transfer $120,000 from the MES Roof Reserve to fund the MES Egress Project; the minutes record the board ction but do not specify the timeline or approving authority for that transfer.
