Marlborough fire officials report damaged rescue vehicle, new engine nearing service and Park Road structure fire

Marlborough fire officials reported equipment setbacks and recent training updates at the March 16, 2026 Fire Commission meeting.

Fire Chief Kevin Asklar told commissioners that a rescue vehicle sustained damage and "may be out of service for six to eight months." He said driver training for a new engine is underway and that vehicle should be in service within roughly two weeks.

Chief Asklar and Deputy Chief Todd Cohen also discussed training: Cohen reported hands-on evolutions and power-tools training, and the commission noted hazmat training scheduled for April. Captain Kyle Szemreylo reported that apparatus ET217 is no longer serviceable and that a second-hand replacement has been purchased; he said a quote from New England had been received and would be discussed further.

The department also reviewed a recent structure fire on Park Road. Commissioners and department staff said the Marlborough Volunteer Fire Department handled the incident with no injuries. Fire Marshal Joe Asklar later reported the building was too dangerous to enter and that the cause remains "undetermined," with a formal report expected from the Connecticut State Police Fire and Explosion Investigation Unit (CSP F.E.I.U.).

Commissioners were additionally briefed on routine items including bills submitted for approval and a discussion about commissioner uniforms. The minutes record no formal vote tied to equipment purchases during the meeting.
