Superintendent Dr. Manuel Valenuela said the revisions are operational rather than policy changes and are intended to align district materials with state statute and school catalogs. "A few years ago, the state legislature passed a law ... Starting this year, it's 70%." he said, referring to the civics-test requirement.
The board also clarified that elements of band programs (wind ensemble, symphonic, percussion and creative movement) may count toward the district's PE credit in certain circumstances, and that marching-band participation typically counts only during the marching-season semester.
Board members discussed placement of explanatory footnotes and agreed to follow the policy-review process for a clean second reading. The board voted to adopt the updated documents during the meeting.
The changes are administrative and intended to remove confusion between board documents and the high school catalogs used by families during course registration.
