Superintendent spotlights teacher semifinalists, enrollment push and ICCU scoreboard partnership

Superintendent Dr. Manuel Valenzuela used his report to highlight community programs, teacher recognition and a corporate partnership for school scoreboards.
Valenzuela described visiting Sahuarita Primary School to read a gardening book supplied by retired physician Randy Van Noorstand, who the superintendent said has distributed the book to kindergarteners through his Rotary Club and "served like 2,000 in the last few years." Valenzuela relayed that Van Noorstand told students, "These young people renew my hope in the future of America."
Valenzuela announced that the Arizona Educational Foundation named three Sahuarita teachers among 15 statewide semifinalists for Teacher of the Year; he named Kellyana Smith, Yolanda Serbanuc and Jana Turner and noted that Tiffany Jace, the current Arizona Teacher of the Year, is from Sahuarita.
On enrollment outreach, Valenzuela described a re-registration competition at Sahuarita Primary School and celebrated a teacher (Ms. Bartol) who reached full classroom re-registration. He framed the campaign as part of efforts to showcase district programs to attract and retain families.
Valenzuela also said Idaho Central Credit Union (ICCU) agreed to fund modern Jumbotron-style scoreboards at both high schools and gymnasium scoreboards for baseball, softball and basketball; the district plans to involve multimedia arts students in creating graphics and videos for the displays.
The superintendent and board then moved into a series of recognitions: the district’s Leader in Character awards (honoring students from primary through high school), April support staff member of the month (Vinnie Huggett, a campus monitor at Savanna Middle School) and the volunteer of the year (Kira Westwood at Savanna Middle School).
