Sahuarita board honors staff, volunteers and student leaders at regular meeting

The Sahuarita Unified School District governing board spent a large portion of the meeting recognizing employees, volunteers and students. Assistant Superintendent Scott DS and Superintendent Dr. Manuel Valenzo presented honors including Michelle Murphy of Copperview Elementary, named support-staff team member of the month for her work as attendance clerk, and Amy Leiden of Walden Grove, named Volunteer of the Year for her booster-club and hiring-panel contributions.
The board also recognized student "Leaders in Character" from multiple schools: Valyria Spence (Soapery Elementary), Whitney Brown and Dylan Carrasco (Alza Trail spelling winners noted earlier in the superintendent’s remarks), and senior Geneva Sparks (Sahuarita High School), among others. Staff noted that photographs of the honorees will be shared with the local paper and that small tokens (certificates and bookstore gift cards) were provided by a district sponsor.
Superintendent Dr. Manuel Valenzo framed the recognitions as celebration of public-school service and praised the volunteer board members for their time and community service. He also noted district music and extracurricular achievements, including students selected for the Southern Arizona regional honor ensembles and a high school band invited to a Philadelphia parade.
The meeting continued after the recognitions with no public comment and moved on to the business portion of the agenda.
