Sahuarita board approves $767,532 GMP for main auditorium lighting upgrade

The Sahuarita Unified District governing board approved a Guaranteed Maximum Price (GMP) of $767,532 for a main auditorium lighting upgrade, part of the district27s bond-funded facilities work.

Superintendent Dr. Manuel Valenuela described the 1970s-era auditorium as aging and in need of electrical and lighting upgrades. Assistant Superintendent Scott DS and facilities staff said the project includes a new electrical plant, advanced controls, higher-efficiency long-range LED fixtures and interior painting of lobby and auditorium surfaces.

"The GMP is for $767,532," the superintendent said. Facilities staff stated the contractor is Core Construction and estimated a construction window starting June 1 with completion by July 31, spanning the summer to minimize classroom disruption.

Board members noted the building27s historic features and expressed support for modernizing lighting and controls to improve safety and efficiency. One member described the building27s original mechanical systems and the district27s ongoing maintenance program for the auditorium.

The board moved, seconded and approved the GMP by voice vote.

Why it matters The upgrade is intended to improve energy efficiency, reduce maintenance costs (reducing the need to climb rafters to change bulbs) and update controls for performances and community events. The funding is part of the district27s previously approved bond program.

Next steps Construction is scheduled to begin June 1; staff will manage scheduling to avoid school disruptions and return to the board with any significant scope or cost changes.
