Robinson said the comments clustered around four themes: the timing of parent-teacher conferences (some respondents want conferences at the end of quarters instead of mid-quarter), requests for adding the Wednesday before Thanksgiving as an extra day off, proposals to start school later in August, and interest in aligning spring break with neighboring districts.
"We had 150 participants and an overall favorable rating," Robinson said, summarizing the survey. She recommended the board adopt the calendar as presented but noted staff will remain open to adjustments if the community raises a strong preference.
Superintendent Dr. Manuel Valenuela urged flexibility: "As long as we're covering our 180 days and meeting our educational obligations I'm flexible to whatever the critical mass of our community wants."
Board members discussed the trade-offs. Several said mid-quarter conferences were adopted to identify student needs earlier and allow timely interventions, while others noted the additional burden on teachers and the challenge of scheduling during high-activity periods. One board member said that adding a Wednesday off before Thanksgiving is feasible but would require deciding which day to reclaim elsewhere to maintain semester balance.
The board moved and seconded the recommendation and approved the calendar by voice vote. No roll-call tallies were recorded on the public microphone.
