Board adopts Discovery Education science materials for secondary grades

The Sahuarita Unified School District governing board voted Wednesday to adopt Discovery Education Science and Pivot Interactives as the district’s core secondary (6–12) science curriculum.
Assistant Superintendent Darlene Robinson, who led the adoption committee, said the recommendation follows a comprehensive vetting process that included teachers, parents, special education and administrative stakeholders. The adoption will move digital Discovery content and Pivot labs from supplemental use to the foundational instructional framework at the secondary level. Robinson said the resources include a text-to-speech tool to support accessibility.
Robinson outlined professional development for staff: secondary teacher PD sessions are scheduled July 30–31, with administrator training on July 31. Board members asked whether hands-on labs remain possible; Robinson and colleagues said the adopted materials supply digital lab experiences but teachers retain discretion to supplement with hands-on activities where appropriate.
The board approved the adoption by voice vote.
The district said the move is intended to bring curricular consistency, continuous content updates, and cost-savings by reducing the need for consumable lab materials.
