Officer Brenton Deadmond named Mt. Vernon Officer of the Year

Mayor John Lewis turned the Jan. 5 meeting to Police Chief Robert Brands, who presented Officer Brenton Deadmond as the Mt. Vernon Police Department's Officer of the Year.
Chief Brands said Deadmond, who has been with the department a little more than three years, "has made a big impact on the department." Sergeant Pendley nominated Deadmond, noting his positive attitude, willingness to raise questions respectfully, and commitment to training. Brands credited Deadmond with completing field training, beginning to train other officers, obtaining a drone pilot license, joining the MVPD High Risk Team support unit, and serving as a high-risk traffic stop instructor. The minutes note Deadmond is on the list for promotion to corporal.
As he accepted the award Deadmond thanked his wife and family for their support and praised his fellow officers, saying they "constantly push each other to be the best" through training and mutual support. Mayor Lewis congratulated Deadmond and called the recognition well deserved.
The recognition was ceremonial; no formal council vote on the award was recorded in the minutes. The meeting continued to other agenda items and adjourned at 7:11 p.m.
