Mount Vernon to pay $32,775 share for IL 37 resurfacing and signal upgrades

The Mount Vernon City Council unanimously approved a resolution on Feb. 2 to enter an agreement with the Illinois Department of Transportation for resurfacing State Route 37 (IL 37) from Main Street to Loop Road and for associated ADA sidewalk and traffic-signal improvements.
City Manager Nathan McKenna told the council that while IDOT will pay for the roadway-surface work through federal funds, the state will not cover the city’s share of parking-lane resurfacing and will ask the city to pay half of the cost for upgrading the traffic signal at 10th and Harrison because Harrison is a local road. McKenna said the total one-time city cost for the parking area and signal share is $32,775. He also noted the city will be responsible for an ongoing cell service connection for the traffic signals; the city will pay and invoice IDOT for 50% of the monthly bill.
Council Member Joe Gliosci moved to approve the resolution; Council Member Donte Moore seconded and the motion passed unanimously as Resolution #2026-04. The council did not identify separate funding sources at the meeting beyond the stated cost-sharing arrangement.
