Mount Vernon proclaims city a Purple Heart City after Casey Jr. High Beta Club request

Students from Casey Jr. High’s Beta Club asked the Mount Vernon City Council on Jan. 20 to designate the city a Purple Heart City, and Mayor John Lewis read and signed a proclamation making the formal designation.
Holden Burge, speaking for the group, said the Beta Club’s goal “is to participate in community services and learn to be leaders for the future.” Beta Club member MaLenna Mays told the council the designation would be a way to thank Purple Heart recipients and their families: “By being a Purple Heart City, we are thanking these Veterans and their families for their service and showing them gratitude for their service.”
Mayor Lewis read the Proclamation and told the students “the City of Mount Vernon is now a Purple Heart City” and encouraged residents to show appreciation for Purple Heart recipients. Council Member Donte Moore said he knows several community members who are Purple Heart recipients and expects they will appreciate the recognition.
The Proclamation was signed and presented to the Casey Jr. High Beta Club at the meeting. No formal ordinance or vote number was required beyond the council’s unanimous approval of presenting and signing the Proclamation. The council did not attach immediate additional policy or budgetary actions to the proclamation.
The designation is symbolic recognition by the municipal government; the proclamation will remain part of the city record and was handed to the students at the meeting.
