"By State Statute the Employee appreciation dinner can not exceed fifty dollars a plate," Carothers said, and noted state law does not specify a limit for gifts. Council members referenced the city’s prior practice of distributing hams, meat bundles and community cash with values matching those amounts.
Councilor Sue Sapp moved to close the public hearing and, after discussion, made the motion to set the community cash amounts; Max Allen seconded. The motion to set the gift amounts passed on a 4-0 vote. The council recorded no public objections during the hearing.
The action formalizes the amounts the city will give at its annual appreciation event and clarifies the council’s interpretation of the state statute about dinner limits. The council did not adopt a separate ordinance and gave no additional direction about procurement or distribution processes.
