Barbara Craig presented a proposal to the Streator City Council to relocate and enhance the Coffee Pot Lady (canteen) memorial from the former Santa Fe Depot to a more visible site in City Park adjacent to the Veterans Memorial.
Craig said the current depot location limits public visibility and access and recommended moving the memorial to a central civic space where families, students and visitors would encounter it more often. She proposed installing an interpretive marker at the depot site to preserve historical context and suggested coordinating with the Streator Historical Society and veterans organizations for structural assessment and relocation. Funding options she mentioned included federal, state and local grants, hotel/motel tax revenue, tourism incentives and donations.
Craig told the council the memorial "commemorates the extraordinary efforts of local volunteers during World War II who served over 1 million soldiers passing through Streator" and argued the relocation would strengthen civic identity and educational opportunities. Council members asked questions about structural damage at the depot, vibration from heavy rail traffic and the depot's current ownership by BNSF; Craig responded that those concerns supported careful study of relocation logistics and preserving the original site with signage.
The council did not take formal action at the meeting but accepted the proposal for consideration and discussion during subsequent review processes.
