Mayor George proposes buying 535 High Mountain Road for police, administration and library space

Mayor Randy George used the borough’s Jan. 2 reorganization meeting to outline facilities plans that would shift municipal space and add community uses. Speaking to the council, George said the borough intends to purchase 535 High Mountain Road and repurpose the building so that the Police Department occupies the lower level, administration takes the ground floor and the library moves to the upper floor. The current library building would be transformed into a community center.
"The members of the governing body made the mistake 30 years ago not to purchase that building and it will not happen again," Mayor George said, identifying the acquisition as a priority and noting the borough would offset purchase costs by selling the former fire house on Belmont Avenue.
George also announced plans to continue refurbishing the American Legion building (including installing a gable roof) and to refurbish the Buehler’s Cultural Center. He framed the projects as part of preparing the borough for its 125th anniversary in 2026 alongside the United States’ 250th anniversary.
Council did not take a final vote on acquisition at the Jan. 2 meeting; the statement was presented during the mayor’s message as direction and planning rather than formal action. Any property purchase, sale of the Belmont Avenue firehouse, or capital expense will be subject to formal resolutions, budget certification and any required procurement or public‑notice processes before the borough commits funds.
