North Haledon receives $250,000 open-space grant; council reviews engineering updates and facility rehab plans

Mayor Randy George briefed the council on ongoing renovations at the American Legion Building, overseen by a contractor working with Department of Public Works employees. He said work will continue next year with a new roof and installation of hardie board to replace the front bricks and that the borough intends to hire a project manager to supervise continued improvements. George also proposed rehabilitating the Buehler’s Cultural Center, listing window replacement, installation of a gas fireplace in the chimney, floor sanding and electrical updates so the facility could serve as a small catering venue for North Haledon residents.
Communications in the same agenda included a thank-you from the mayor to Market Basket for donating food for Veterans Day events. The minutes also record a Lakeside at NH homeowners association vote to lower neighborhood speed limits to 20 mph; the Borough Attorney advised that 20 mph is below the 25-mph limit set by the New Jersey Department of Transportation and that the North Haledon Police Department would not have authority to enforce a lower limit.
