Town staff told the Streets and Traffic Committee the curb and sidewalk project has completed much of the design work and that construction funding will depend on grant outcomes.
The staff member said plans reached stage four of design and were submitted for a RAISE-build federal grant tied to the town’s earlier AZ Smart grant-funded design. Staff reported a prior grant submission due Feb. 27 and said they will apply for a Transportation Alternatives (TA) grant that is state and/or federally funded and requires a 5% local match.
When asked about the price tag, the staff member said construction could be up to $8 million for new sidewalks and curb work covering numerous blocks across the town. Staff described town inventory as roughly 22 lane miles of roads and an estimated 1–2 miles of sidewalks; the project uses standard 400‑ft segments and currently lists 89 segments from initial design, with additions as needs were identified. The staff member did not provide a final linear‑footage count for sidewalks.
The staff member said the application will include remaining stage‑four and stage‑five design items and that the town plans to seek construction grants; staff cautioned that award of construction funding is uncertain and that the TA grant requires a local match. No construction contract or appropriation decision was made at the March 23 meeting.
