At its Sept. 9 meeting, the Baboquivari Unified School District governing board approved multiple action items including a contractual addendum with the Arizona State School for the Deaf and Blind, the demolition of an unsafe building, and routine personnel and consent items.
Superintendent Ruin Diaz described the first action as an addendum to the district’s annual MOU with the Arizona State School for the Deaf and Blind that combines the longstanding fee‑for‑service arrangement with a new voucher option. Diaz told the board the agreement was reviewed by legal counsel and asked the board to approve the addendum. A board member emphasized the need for transparency and assurance that the program benefits district students; Miss Sylvia Hendricks seconded the motion and the board voted to approve the addendum.
On a separate action, district staff outlined the condition of an old jail building that has been vandalized and deemed unsafe. The board approved a motion to demolish the structure after the district consulted the fire department and other offices; Miss Kathleen Vance seconded the motion and the vote carried.
During consideration of extra‑duty assignments, a board member announced a conflict of interest and recused themself from that item; the board then moved, seconded and approved the extra‑duty assignments. The consent agenda was approved without objection. The board also voted to convene into executive session under A.R.S. 38‑431.03(A)(13) and later returned to regular session.
No recorded roll‑call tallies were read into the public record for these items in the spoken record; motions were seconded and described as carrying.
