The Baboquivari Unified School District recognized a $65,000 donation from Desert Diamond Casino at its Nov. 12 governing-board meeting.
Board members and Superintendent Ruben Diaz thanked the casino and family-and-community engagement staff for bringing the funding to the district. The donation, described in the award read to the board, came through the Desert Diamond Casino’s annual golf classic and will support the district’s family and community engagement department.
Miss Hart, the district’s family-and-community engagement director (participating remotely), and other administrators described planned uses: parent workshops (including sessions to reconnect community members with native cooking traditions), take-home materials tied to workshops, and direct supports for families. Diaz also noted Sunrise House’s October distribution of roughly 4,500 pounds of food and service to about 390 children as an example of community benefit tied to engagement work.
Board members said the grant will be used to support students and families rather than district operations, and they praised staff for pursuing outside funding. Administrators said further reporting would be provided at subsequent meetings and that this check is one of multiple donations the district will announce in coming sessions.
