Meridian Waste expresses interest in contract renewal; extension office introduces new ponds-and-lakes resource

During public comments at the Feb. 24 Covington County Commission meeting Gentry Shows of Meridian Waste told commissioners the county's solid-waste contract is in year six and that the company is interested in invoking a three-year renewal clause. Shows noted Meridian Waste employs local residents and operates a shop in Opp, Alabama.
Chuck Simon of the Covington County Extension Office introduced Levi Blackmon, the office's new resource for ponds and lakes, and said Blackmon has already worked with many county residents. Walter Lewis of Piper Sandler & Co. offered to meet with county staff and commissioners to discuss debt and borrowing options if the commission is interested in exploring financing.
Commissioners received these comments during the public-comment period and approved proclamations recognizing youth wrestlers Raylan Stacks, Ronan Stacks, Jaden Lockhart and Ace George for state competition achievements.
No formal action on contract renewal was recorded; Meridian Waste's expression of interest was entered on the record for commission consideration and follow-up.
