Covington County approves temporary custodian position, surplus and vehicle transfer; staff reports roadwork and local events

Covington County commissioners approved several operational and personnel actions and heard staff reports on maintenance work and local events.
On personnel, the commission approved hiring a temporary part-time custodian (not to exceed six months) to cover a full-time employee on medical leave and to provide cleaning support for leased health-department space. Staff member Philip said the hire could roll to a regular part-time position if additional leases are finalized. Commissioners voted to authorize the position and to give Philip discretion to roll the position into an ongoing part-time role if warranted.
The commission declared four engineering vehicles surplus for sale on GovDeals — a 1997 Chevrolet Cheyenne 2500, a 2006 Ford F250, a 2006 Chevrolet 2500 and a 2006 Ford F250 SuperDuty — noting the vehicles are aged and have mechanical issues. The commission also approved transferring a 2010 Chevrolet Silverado from maintenance to the engineers department at no cost.
During staff reports, county road crews described right-of-way and shoulder work on County Road 70, Heath River Falls Road and the Antioch area, and noted new graders and equipment arriving soon. Staff reported a recent arena barrel-racing event that drew more than 300 participants and record times. The county’s budget report showed departments on track for the first quarter. Commissioners also discussed a 3-mill property tax that funds volunteer fire departments and ambulance services; staff said the county distributes that property-tax revenue to roughly 26 recipient agencies and estimated payments around $54,000 per department this year.
The commission closed the meeting after completing business and set follow-up tasks for staff on leases, purchase contracts and surplus sales.
