Revenue Commissioner Chuck Patterson briefed the Covington County Commission on Jan. 27 about current tax collection and a potential state exemption that could affect county revenue.
Patterson reported there is "$1,660,779.12 unpaid on property taxes." He said the state plans a $100,000 business personal property exemption and that his office will send a letter asking the commission whether the county should opt in or opt out of the exemption. "If the county opts in on the exemption it would be a loss of $37,580 of revenue for a year," Patterson said.
Patterson also said his office is working with several residents to obtain exemptions for taxpayers over age 65. Chairman Michael Smith asked about the county's total property-tax projection for the year; Patterson said it was too early to tell.
The commission did not take immediate action on the exemption at the Jan. 27 meeting; staff will send the formal opt-in/opt-out letter to commissioners as described by Patterson.
