Willow Park planning panel recommends council approve digital pylon sign

The Willow Park Planning and Zoning Commission on April 21 recommended that the town council approve a Specific Use Permit for a new multi-tenant electronic pylon sign at the Crown Point addition.

At a public hearing, a staff member said the proposal calls for a 1.29-acre site adjacent to “grounds for hounds,” located in a dedicated easement on the corner of the property, and that the sign would not exceed 35 feet in height. "The public hearing is to consider a specific use permit for the district," the staff member said, describing the sign as an "informative multi-tenant pylon sign" intended to advertise district events such as live bands.

The commission heard that the sign’s electronic message would change every 8–10 seconds. The staff member said the town is updating its sign ordinance and cited similar local electronic signs and highway DOT message boards that change at roughly the same rate, adding the 8–10 second interval is commonly used and "not enough to be a distraction." Commissioners viewed an aerial in the meeting packet that shows the easement behind a dumpster and next to a proposed driveway; staff confirmed the easement would remain tied to the sign if the property transfers.

After the public hearing closed with no public comments, a commissioner moved to approve the SUP "as written" and a second was given. The chair announced the commission voted in favor and will recommend approval to the town council; the transcript records a voice approval but does not include a roll-call tally.

The commission also approved its meeting minutes from April 21, 2026, earlier in the session.

Next steps: the commission’s recommendation will be forwarded to the Willow Park town council for final action.
