Broken Bow City Council approves $192,849.76 in bills, schedules budget workshop and hears Rotary request

The Broken Bow City Council on July 25 unanimously approved its consent agenda, which included payment of city bills totaling $192,849.76 and the minutes of the July 11 meeting. Mayor Rod Sonnichsen presided over the meeting at the Broken Bow Municipal Auditorium; Councilmembers Chris Myers, Paul Holland and Russ Smith were present and David Baltz was excused.
Why it matters: The consent vote authorized routine expenditures and administrative changes that affect how the City of Broken Bow manages accounts and upcoming budget planning. The council’s actions set the city’s near-term financial and administrative procedures ahead of the fall budget process.
The council approved the consent agenda on a motion by Councilmember Chris Myers, seconded by Russ Smith. The published bill list accompanying the consent agenda included line items for vendors and services across departments and showed a total payable amount of $192,849.76. The council did not withhold any items from the consent agenda and the roll call vote was unanimous.
In other administrative actions, the council approved three related motions to add City Treasurer Jennifer Waterhouse as an authorized signer on all city bank accounts at Bruning Bank and Nebraska State Bank, to add her as an authorized name on the city’s safety deposit box at First Interstate Bank, and to set the date for a budget workshop on Thursday, Aug. 24, 2023, at 12:00 p.m. Those motions passed unanimously.
The council also approved updated Broken Bow Public Library policies in a separate unanimous vote.
Community request: Deb McCaslin of the Broken Bow Area Rotary Club addressed the council seeking support to host the Truckers Against Trafficking trailer. McCaslin said the plan is to park the trailer on the north side of the Municipal Building from Sunday, Aug. 27 through Tuesday, Aug. 29 and that doing so would require closing part of the street. Mayor Sonnichsen told McCaslin that any street closure must be placed on a future council agenda for formal action.
The meeting concluded with mayoral and council comments thanking McCaslin and expressing support for the Rotary Club’s outreach. The council adjourned at 6:23 p.m.
