Northfield to receive donated Boose/Electric Blvd. parcel; council backs watershed membership renewal

The Village of Northfield’s council met Oct. 14 and handled routine municipal business, including approval of minutes and acceptance of a Mayor’s Court disbursal report. Council approved the Sept. 23, 2020 minutes on a motion by Alan Hipps, seconded by Nick Magistrelli; roll call showed Ms. Renell Noack abstained while Mr. Keith Czerr, Mr. Gary Vojtush, Mr. Nick Magistrelli and Mr. Alan Hipps voted yes.
Law Director Brad Bryan presented the September Mayor’s Court Monthly Disbursal Report; a motion by Councilmember Renell Noack, seconded by Nick Magistrelli, accepted that report on a unanimous recorded vote of the members voting (Mr. Czerr, Ms. Noack, Mr. Vojtush, Mr. Magistrelli, Mr. Hipps — yes).
On behalf of Engineer Rich Wasosky, Mr. Bryan reported that Tinkers Creek Watershed Partners asked the Village to renew 2021 membership and requested a letter urging the Northeast Ohio Regional Sewer District (NEORSD) to continue funding the organization. Bryan said the annual membership fee is $1,000 and falls within the Mayor’s spending authority; Council indicated support for continuing the affiliation and Mr. Bryan said he would send the letter of support to NEORSD.
Mr. Bryan also informed council that the donation of the Boose/Electric Blvd. parcel to the Village is scheduled to close the following day; once closed, the parcel, which is adjacent to the Pitluk Preserve, will be owned by the Village. The council did not take separate legislative action on the donation at the Oct. 14 meeting; Bryan presented the closing as forthcoming.
Councilmembers discussed personnel matters in general terms: Councilmember Gary Vojtush asked whether the Village hiring freeze had been lifted; Mayor Jesse Nehez said it had. Mr. Vojtush and Ms. Noack said they favor elevating two part‑time police officers to full‑time status as had been planned before the pandemic, and asked Law Director Bryan to prepare the appropriate legislation. The effective date for any promotions will be set by the Mayor, Police Chief, and Finance Director.
The council was told the State postponed the Nature Works grant program because of COVID‑19 funding concerns; if the Village wishes to pursue playground improvements for Smith Park the Village will need to reapply next year. The meeting adjourned at 7:55 p.m.
