Northfield council authorizes purchase of hands‑free chest compression device for Fire Department

Northfield’s Village Council on Oct. 14 authorized the Fire Department to buy a Lucas hands‑free chest compression device, approving an expenditure not to exceed $15,000 to cover a $14,881.40 price quote. Fire Chief Jason Buss requested the purchase and said the equipment would improve safety during resuscitation and help protect staff during the COVID‑19 pandemic.
The motion to authorize the purchase was made by Councilmember Gary Vojtush and seconded by Councilmember Renell Noack. Roll‑call votes recorded Mr. Keith Czerr — yes; Ms. Renell Noack — yes; Mr. Gary Vojtush — yes; Mr. Nick Magistrelli — yes; Mr. Alan Hipps — yes. The council approved the purchase. Chief Buss told council the purchase is intended to be paid from the Village’s CARES Act funds and that he had discussed the procurement with the Mayor and Finance Director.
Chief Buss also reported that a replacement‑engine research group has completed its work and asked to present findings to the Fire & Safety Committee; Councilmember Noack agreed to schedule that presentation. He said a new storm siren has been delivered and that representatives from University Hospitals will administer flu shots to Village employees on Oct. 19; employees should contact Captain Zemek to participate.
The council scheduled the Fire & Safety Committee meeting for Wednesday, Oct. 28, at 6:30 p.m., with the Fire Department presenting first and the Police Department following. The council did not take additional action on fire‑engine procurement at the Oct. 14 meeting.
