Engineer warns of grease in sewers, says Dollar General site stabilization not approved

Village Engineer Rich Wasosky told the council Nov. 11 that a Northeast Ohio Regional Sewer District (NEORSD) camera inspection found “significant grease and debris” in the sanitary sewer on Beach Avenue and North Plaza from State Rt. 8 to roughly 500 feet east. The Village sewer crew cleaned the lines, and Wasosky recommended the village investigate which businesses may be dumping grease and debris into the system in that area.
Wasosky also reported that the Dollar General building contractor filed a Notice of Termination with the Ohio EPA indicating project completion, but that Summit Soil & Water Conservation District’s inspections are not complete and the detention-basin stabilization has not been approved due to inadequate grass growth.
Why it matters: Grease and debris in sanitary sewers can cause blockages and public-health risks and may indicate noncompliance by nearby commercial grease-generating businesses. Separately, incomplete stabilization at new commercial sites raises erosion and stormwater concerns until the detention basins are vegetated and accepted by inspecting agencies.
What the council heard and next steps: Wasosky asked staff to investigate potential sources of grease and debris; the Village had already cleaned the affected sewers. Summit Soil & Water’s mandatory MCM6 inspection of Houghton Road and Chestnut Avenue service facilities is scheduled for Nov. 24, 2020. The council did not take separate formal action during this item at the Nov. 11 meeting.
