City attorney presents draft ethics and contract-standardization ordinances for council review

Van said he incorporated pecuniary-interest language from the city charter into the ethics draft and merged representative language from two other communities (Livonia and Jackson) as the working base. The draft addresses ethical standards of conduct, disclosure requirements and enforcement provisions. The employment-contract draft follows suggested mayoral guidance and is cross-referenced to the ethics language.
Councilors were invited to submit redlines and suggestions to the city attorney; both drafts are explicitly labeled as nonfinal and are not up for a vote. Van told council he will circulate redlines and prepare the ordinances for first reading once direction is provided.
Next steps: Council members to provide comments or markups to the city attorney; attorney will revise and return a version suitable for first reading when the council’s direction is clear.
