RSU 23 administrators told the board March 8 they are planning a joint three-district school board meeting with Saco/Biddeford and Dayton to consider shifting school start times. The proposed change would move most students from 8:30 a.m. to 8 a.m.; dismissal times would change to 2:45 p.m. for grades 6-12 and 2:15 p.m. for PreK-5 if adopted across the districts.
Building principals distributed a Start School Later (SSL) survey to parents and staff. Mike Flaherty reported about 200 responses had been collected and that close to 49 percent of respondents supported the proposal; administration will vet and summarize the survey results for the board.
Superintendent Lloyd Crocker described the plan for a late-March joint meeting intended to give the three districts a coordinated opportunity to vote on start-time changes. The minutes note this would be an "unprecedented" joint meeting intended to demonstrate unified support across districts if members choose to vote that way.
The Calendar Committee will present an updated draft calendar in April that will reflect any changes to start times if the board pursues SSL further. No final board action on start times was recorded at the March 8 meeting.
