Mount Sterling department heads report spring cleanup, code enforcement, police outreach and upcoming projects

Mount Sterling — At its regular meeting, Mount Sterling department heads gave monthly updates on maintenance, permits, enforcement and community outreach that outlined routine operations and near-term projects.
Nathan Boston, the city’s director of public works, said the spring cleanup produced about 50 tons of material — down from 56 tons last year — and involved roughly 101 truckloads. He reported completion of the seasonal paint-collection event, ongoing painting and tree‑trimming, replacement of seven damaged or vandalized signs, repairs to police-vehicle axles, a new shop roof and near-completion of Wind Street and Richmond Avenue work. Boston also noted staff training milestones and upcoming paving bids for Big Staff and Wind Street.
Building Inspector Jim Johnson said permits were slightly down but that three residential starts are expected in the Silver Creek area. Code enforcement officer Mike Maguire reported 83 violations addressed this month across nuisance categories and said he has begun outreach to alcohol retailers. Chief Noel said police calls for May were logged, announced recent academy graduations and described summer community outreach plans including vacation checks and neighborhood events.
City Clerk Janette said the city has five recurring fireworks vendors permitted to sell from June 20 through July 5, that alcohol-license renewals are ongoing with a June 30 deadline (45 license holders, 14 already renewed) and that property-tax collection stands at about 96% with 135 delinquent bills to be referred after June 30 if unpaid.
The mayor’s report noted the Mount Sterling Water and Sewer/Big Staff Court/Wind Street project is nearing closeout; the mayor asked for volunteers to review facade-grant applications due June 24. The farmers market opens this weekend and city hall will close for Juneteenth and Independence Day observances.
Officials characterized the month as productive and routine; no new policy changes were proposed during these reports.
