At the June 16 workshop a commissioner raised the issue of property-tax relief and proposed placing a 2.5% owner-occupancy credit on the board's agenda next week so action could occur before the July 1 deadline. Staff warned that school districts and townships may oppose the measure because it affects tax distributions, and asked the prosecutor to prepare a draft resolution for the board to consider.
The speaker framed the credit as a targeted relief for homeowners, seniors on fixed incomes and veterans ahead of a countywide reappraisal. "We need to give the residents of Trumbull County a tax relief," the commissioner said, noting the potential fiscal trade-offs and urging the board to act quickly if it wanted the change to take effect this tax cycle.
Commissioners said they would consider the proposal and directed staff to prepare draft language and legal guidance so the board could vote if it chose to do so prior to the statutory deadline.
Next steps: The prosecutor's office was asked to draft a resolution and staff will place the item on next week's agenda for formal consideration and a possible vote before July 1.
