The Sweetwater County Board of County Commissioners unanimously appointed Rich Fisher as interim sheriff on June 16, following the Republican Central Committee's submission of three nominees.
Tony Nemec, chairman of the county Republican Central Committee, told commissioners the committee interviewed candidates on June 13 and forwarded Rich Fisher, Richie Como and Ozzie Knezovich for consideration. Commissioner Richards nominated Rich Fisher during the meeting; after a motion and second, the board voted in favor and scheduled the oath of office, which a judge administered during a brief recess.
Commissioners said their selection focused on minimizing disruption in the sheriff's office ahead of an upcoming election. Commissioner Richards said he weighed candidates' ability to "shepherd this agency through the next 6 and a half months of what is turmoil." The board congratulated Fisher and moved on to the next agenda items.
Next steps: the oath was administered immediately after the vote, and the board resumed regular business. No further deliberations were recorded on operational changes to the sheriff's office at the meeting.
