Council members on May 15 approved seven façade‑improvement grants in the downtown redevelopment program, drawn from a $400,000 award the city received from the Department of Economic Development. A Chamber of Commerce representative outlined seven prioritized projects; the council considered each project separately and recorded roll-call approvals.
The downtown presentation named multiple recipients for the fourth round of façade funding, highlighting work on landmark buildings including the Henderson State Bank building, the opera house, the Curtsies Boutique (formerly McNeel Floral), and other commercial storefronts. The presenter noted private owner investment paired with grants and said the overall downtown program has attracted more than $2.2 million in investment since its start in 2016.
Councilors approved grants individually on motion and second; recorded votes show affirmative votes by Amanda Vanishes, Piper, McGregor, North, Shepard and Poster on each item. Council members and the presenter described the program as catalytic, helping preserve historic facades and prompting additional private rehabilitation.
The awards were approved as separate motions; project-specific grant amounts were provided in the agenda packet and read into the record during the meeting. Councilors said they expect to see the physical improvements and to return in future meetings with any remaining projects that were not ready for this round.
