Citizen asks Ennis to recognize Czech and Slovak heritage month

Ennis — During public comment at the Oct. 1 meeting, resident Paul Kovaric asked the Ennis City Commission to establish a Czech and Slovak heritage month to recognize the multi-generational contributions of those communities to the city.
Kovaric told the commission that Czechs and Slovaks have built the community for five generations and that cultural organizations have dwindled from about five groups to three in recent years. He said he previously asked NSISD whether it recognized a Czech and Slovak heritage month and was told that in some years October had been designated.
"Why is there not a Czech and Slovak heritage month in this city?" Kovaric asked. Mayor Rayburn said the commission had his contact information and that the city secretary's office would discuss the matter and get back to him.
