Ennis joins regional settlement limiting Atmos Energy rate hike; residential customers face about $5.52 monthly increase

The Ennis City Commission voted Aug. 20 to accept a negotiated settlement between the Atmos Cities Steering Committee and Atmos Energy Corporation regarding the company’s 2024 rate review filing.
Staff reported Atmos originally requested a $196.8 million increase in its filing; attorneys for the Atmos Cities Steering Committee negotiated a settlement that staff described as substantially lower than the original request and said would result in a residential increase of approximately $5.52 per month (about a 6.84% change) for the average household. City staff and counsel said joining the joint settlement is typical for member cities; rejecting the coalition outcome would require the city to pursue its own rate case and retain utilities counsel.
City officials said the negotiated settlement represents the most practicable outcome given the collective bargaining position of the coalition and that there is no direct city expense for participating in the steering committee’s representation. The commission approved the settlement by voice vote.
