City reviews two Old Tellico Road alignment options for new Highway 34 development; cost responsibility to be clarified

Commissioners voiced safety concerns about skewed intersections and said the 90-degree approach (staff’s preferred option) improves stacking and reduces the risk of collisions associated with skewed geometry. Several commissioners asked whether the developer or the city will fund and construct the connector and requested a clear cost allocation and timeline. Staff said there is no confirmed request yet for city-funded construction and committed to follow up with the economic development and the developer to define responsibilities and costs.
The commission asked staff to return with: (1) cost estimates for each alignment; (2) any developer commitments or reimbursement agreements; and (3) clarification of whether planned TxDOT improvements on Highway 34 affect recommended designs. No preferred alignment was adopted; the commission prioritized safe geometry and asked for cost and funding clarity before direction.
