Commission approves procurement of 10 digital speed signs; locations and thresholds to be finalized

City staff and police presented candidate placement for ten digital radar speed signs purchased for about $7,000 each. The signs display driver speed, can flash or show messages when thresholds are exceeded, record speed distributions, and can transmit data via cellular connection for staff analysis.
Staff proposed priority locations based on police crash reports and resident complaints: approaches to town on Highway 34; South Kaufman near Highway 85 approaches; Park Street (near Bluebonnet and the school); Country Club Road (near Tabernacle / Clay approach); and several neighborhood collectors (Lampasas, Sundale, Clay). Commissioners discussed distribution by ward so each commissioner can nominate priority sites for two signs each, and staff said final siting will respect right-of-way constraints, solar exposure, and TxDOT permissions on state routes.
Police representatives said the signs will supplement enforcement and help target patrols: "We'll collect the data, and then if we notice an extreme number of large speeders, the police department will set a patrol car out there," an officer said. Commissioners agreed to consult absent colleagues and return to finalize the map before installation. Staff noted the devices are movable but require new foundations if relocated.
